Ultraviolet plot

"The blood war is on."

Violet (Milla Jovovich) was once a human who worked in a lab. In the lab, she is infected, turning her into a hematophage: a type of vampire that is doomed to death if the antidote is not found. She lost her unborn child because of the virus she contracted. She manages to escape and ends up in the resistance of the hematophages. The Cardinal who rules the world is trying to eradicate all hematophages. As an assassin, Violet is tasked with stealing a briefcase containing the Cardinal's ultimate weapon. It turns out to be a 9-year-old boy. The Cardinal really has a problem then, because her maternal instincts come back to life.

Ha, that was a stroke of luck.

The kitschy special effects ultimately seem more like a style choice than incompetence. The art design of the film is simply well put together and is neatly extended throughout.

The film looks like a video game. So the pacing and action are high and that's a good thing.

Very bad.

I don't know the director that well yet, but based on his career it looks like he's after some style in his action movies. This film is indeed packed with style, but this film provides an ideal example of how things should not be done.

Jovovich is really awful. Horrible. Rarely bad too. I've always thought of her as the "looks-over-acting" actress but this one was really serious. In terms of emotion and drama, she is completely out of the picture, but also in the action genre you quickly see that she can't do anything about it.

Also assisted by worthless supporting roles. It's not very smooth in this movie. Here and there most actors try to play a character, but most fail. It's all very forced and dull.

The action itself is perhaps the only real bright spot in the film. Although the CGI world is ugly, some of the action is original and well shot. There are enough colors to make it all stand out. Assisted by some nice moves.

Unfortunately, the story itself outside of that is also very bad. You would think that you can get special material from a comic book series, but this film doesn't get any further than a lot of colors. The story is very dull and predictable.

Although the colors do stand out, the action isn't exciting at all. The course of the film itself is also a big joke. Suddenly an attempt is made to extract an intensely emotional film, and that gives the film a comedy quality. Probably unintentionally, but I can't say for sure here.

It's really the direction that fails. The separate environment and sometimes colorful actions are the few bright spots, the rest is of a low level. With this Jovovich proves to me that she is the worst action heroine ever. No one has gotten to this level until now.

Too bad, it could have worked. A better casting and script writer would certainly have been necessary.

Bad.

One big pile of ugliness: that's the best way to describe Ultraviolet. Undoubtedly intended as a genre film and who knows, still enjoyed by fans of the genre; But overall I think it's just really bad and ugly. A poorly acting cast, in a hideous setting and then some story about vampires and a virus.. It's all quite uninspired and at times also remarkably tame. Given her filmography in 2006, Milla Jovovich was probably the most logical choice to take on the lead role. In 2021 there will not be much left.
