Die 1000 Augen des Dr. Mabuse plot

"Dr. Mabuse is on the loose !"

Reporter Peter Barter is murdered on his way to the television studio. Commissioner Kras receives a call from someone who had a vision of Barter's death, but is unable to identify the killer. Meanwhile, police are concentrating on the Luxor hotel because there seems to be a connection between this hotel and a number of unsolved crimes. When a wealthy American at the Luxor hotel narrowly prevents a young girl's suicide, the question arises whether the suspected criminal genius Dr. Mabuse might speak for itself.

The paranoia of the first two Mabuse films is no longer present here, but what remains is the uncertainty about who is who (and what) and which motives are at play. The somewhat claustrophobic hotel with anonymous corridors, double walls, two-way mirrors, and secret rooms (not to mention basements where things happen that cannot bear the light of day) doesn't exactly help either, and as Peter van Eyck becomes increasingly entangled in the web, the nonimal hero Gert Fröbe seems less and less able to help him. Wolfgang Preiss has exactly the right coolness for his role, Werner Peters possesses the same understated charm as the hilarious insurance agent Hieronymus B. Mistelzweig ("B stands for belly!") as Paul Giamatti, Fröbe is sublime as is often the case (and how much he resembles Otto Wernicke in Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse!), and Dawn Addams is truly beautiful. Whether you view it as a run-of-the-mill crime thriller, as a reflection on the role Evil can play even in times of reconstruction and nuclear threat, or as the swan song of a great director, Die 1000 Augen des Dr. Mabuse is certainly worth watching.

Ever since 1978 (when I first saw it in the dead of night on German TV via my small portable black-and-white set), this has been one of my favorite films. Film noir-like atmosphere.

It lacks a bit of the pressure, paranoia, and political references of the first two films and is also not as progressive anymore, almost more nostalgic for 1960. It is also more of a boys' adventure book/comic strip than the first two films, which mostly revolve around double walls, mirrors to spy through, and people who are different from how they appear. Mabuse himself also has only a supporting role in the story.

Lang was approached by a producer to remake the second film, but preferred simply making a third film. In doing so, he breathed new life into the series, which would see even more installments in the years that followed without Lang. For he began to go blind during these years.
