Argh.

I've always said that the three parts are interchangeable, but maybe I should come back to that a little bit. Part 1 was anything but great and besides a small push for innovation I always thought it was an interchangeable part in the trilogy, but after rewatching part 2 I notice one big difference.

While part 1 started its story with some swagger, part 2 is so ridiculously serious and melancholy that it almost seems like you're watching a parody of the first part. Reeves and Fishburne whiz past the overacting, delivering unreal caricatures. Assisted by terrible dialogues and unlikely scenes (like the rave/love scene). This makes it all that much sadder.

That the CG doesn't look so good anymore was to be expected, that the action scenes aren't too exciting anymore either. Furthermore, it takes a very long time and the premise of this film remains fairly lame. Although they will not agree with that in Silicon Valley, there is apparently a whole hype going on that says that we do actually live in a computer sim. Crazy people there.

Nah, this second part was indeed a lot worse than part 1. The Wachowskis have their heads where the sun doesn't shine and that does not benefit this film at all. Fortunately, I did review the third part, so I can ignore it. After this no incentive to watch it again.

0.5*

The most hilarious dialogue line in The Matrix Reloaded comes from Monica Bellucci when she talks about Neo and Trinity: 'You love her. She loves you. It's all about you both'. Hilarious of course, because if there is again something that doesn't turn out to be the chemistry between Reeves and Moss. And yet their love - just like in the first film - is one of the most important elements in this film. But it doesn't come out of the paint for a second. That goes for a lot of moments in The Matrix Reloaded, by the way. Whoever thought that the centuries-long talk in The Matrix couldn't get any worse, see the sequel in which people are babbling even more. Each character gets minutes-long monologues about nothing after an introduction. For example, Frenchman Lambert Wilson talks for minutes about a blond woman who eats a piece of cake. Later Bellucci makes the comment that Wilson can't keep his mouth shut, after which she herself starts chatting endlessly about love.

It is not for nothing that The Matrix Reloaded is mainly known for its action scenes, after all, those are the moments when characters are finally quiet. But you have to be patient to get to these action scenes. We get a lot of political posturing on Zion, where The Matrix Reloaded is mostly reminiscent of the Star Wars prequels. That's never a good sign. Meanwhile, Reeves is getting quasi-philosophical sermons from everyone again. This time not only of Morpheus, but of all kinds of figures. People go on and on about the fate, the goal, the prophecy. So when, after about 50 minutes, hundreds of Hugo Weavings show up to beat up Keanu Reeves, it's a relief. The effects are very dated and often very ugly, but it is entertaining for a while. The well-known highway scene is also very nicely put together and is without doubt the highlight of the film. But a few decent action scenes can't save a whiny and messy movie.

2 stars.
