I found it quite mediocre. You can't help but compare it to Child's Play and then this movie comes off pretty poor. It's almost a literal copy, but the most unfortunate thing is that Dolly doesn't come close to Chucky.

The moments before the doll reveals itself are the most exciting, just like in that other movie that came out four years earlier. Dolly is pretty creepy - what doll isn't - but once she opens her mouth it's over. The clichéd demon voice is just a huge turn-off. If she had just given her a human voice, like Chucky, I'd probably like it better anyway.

The special effects are a bit wooden but that's not bad. The murders are disappointing. Not very shocking and few victims. In addition, the story - although almost a copy - is not well executed. Just look at the spectacular intro of Child's Play, you have to plant your soul in a doll. A plus point is that Jessica is a bit less annoying than the monotonous Andy. But there are still better films within this doll genre.

Slack!

Dolly the doll looks pretty cool and lifelike which makes her seem a bit creepy. When her demon voice makes her entrance, it just gets worse. The story itself is a bit poor and not really exciting. The kills are mediocre and there are very few victims. The acting is not really disturbing, although the characters have little content. The ending is a letdown. 4/10

Director and co-writer Maria Lease had a role in Sinthia: The Devil's Doll (1968) in 1968. It is conceivable that she was inspired by this film when making Dolly Dearest. In my opinion, Lease made the only decent film of her career with Dolly Dearest. Her other directorial contributions to the film world consist of erotic films. Dolly Dearest remains free of hardcore influences. With Dolly Dearest she makes a neat and atmospheric horror film.

The film contains two elements that contribute to the atmosphere. First of all, the creepy puppets, which are brought to life with excellent effects, are responsible for the creepy entertainment. Secondly, in the background there is a storyline with an excavation that is skillfully interwoven with the puppet story. A dirty archaeologist (Rip Torn), the view of an old tomb and of course the mystery that lies hidden there, are atmospheric elements and increase the entertainment value.

The characters are filled in superficially, but not in a way that is annoying. Furthermore, the events are not very surprising but are carried out in such a way that the entertainment is served by it. Dolyy Dearest is not a high flyer but I enjoyed myself with it.
