Mr. & Mrs. Smith plot

"Lombard and Montgomery Get Hitched As They're Getting Unhitched !"

New York couple David and Annie Smith have an unusual marriage with some rules. A rule is that they ask each other a question once a month and then answer it honestly. Annie asks him if he would marry her again if he could do everything new. He replies that he misses his freedom and would rather not marry again. Later in the day, an alderman from the city where David was married comes to tell him that their marriage is illegal because of a district area.

Hitchcock made his name with his famed atmospheric thrillers with plenty of suspense, and those are clearly his best films. Every time he ventures into a different genre, it results in a decent film at best, but oftentimes, it doesn't even reach that level.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith unfortunately falls into the latter category. The first half hour isn't all that bad and actually features some snappy dialogue and some decent humor. But after that, it gradually goes downhill. The humor becomes scarcer, and the story itself meanders along without becoming particularly interesting or captivating. The actors don't perform poorly individually, but Lombard and Montgomery seem to lack some chemistry when they're together.

In short, not a great outing from Hitchcock.

Hitchcock adapted Norman Kresna's screenplay without adding anything because he didn't understand "these kinds of people." The story concerns a young couple [Robert Montgomery and Carole Lombard] married after several years when they learn that their marriage has been declared illegal due to a technicality. In an attempt to revive their somewhat fading relationship, they decide to start their romance over. But that's not without some quibbles and attempts to make each other jealous. This corny screwball comedy can't hold a candle to the genre's masterpieces, but thanks to Kresna's expertise and the chemistry between the two talented leads, it's quite entertaining. But don't expect a Hitchcock touch, as there isn't one. There is a cameo: Hitchcock plays a drunkard who asks for money. Lombard took over directing for that scene.

An atypical Hitchcock. Hithcock has certainly proven throughout his career that he can handle all genres, and this screwball comedy is no exception. However, this film arrived at a time when he had already established his reputation as a thriller director, and it didn't meet audience expectations. That aside, this is a highly enjoyable film. The (anti-)chemistry between Lombard and Montgomery works well. The film is well-paced with plenty of twists and turns and hilarious moments (a favorite is when Montgomery whispers something into the ear of the beautiful woman next to him in a restaurant). It's all very entertaining.

Hitchcock Challenge #50
