Welcome to Mooseport plot

Mooseport is a quiet, friendly town in New England. The fact that Monroe Cole (Gene Hackman), the former president of America, is retiring to Mooseport is a great honor for the residents. Before he can retire peacefully, he is asked if he wants to be the new mayor. He accepts the challenge. During the campaign, he falls for charming Sally, who, however, is in a relationship with Handy Harrison (Ray Romano), owner of the local DIY store. Handy has neglected his girlfriend a bit and she happily accepts Monroe's advances. Because he can't live with this, Handy also runs for mayor. What used to be a quiet campaign is now turning into a veritable election war.

You used to be better than that!

What better way to end your film career than with a role as a US President who decides to run for mayor—as a metaphor for your own presence? That must have crossed Hackman's mind, though he may not have fully realized at the time that this would prove to be his last serious role.

And it's certainly not a bad film. Perhaps not a high-flyer—no Bonnie and Clyde, no Superman, no Riot, no Marooned, no French Connection, no Geronimo, no Quick and the Dead. But with your latest film, it doesn't need to be. A pleasant, warm comedy suffices, with just a few too few jokes, a not-so-strong Romano, and a somewhat cute Tierney. And a fine performance by Hackman. Perhaps even one of his best.
