Bicentennial Man plot
"One robot's 200 year journey to become an ordinary man."
The film follows the 'life' of an android who is bought to perform certain tasks as a household robot. The Martin family soon discovers that they have not brought in an ordinary robot, as Andrew begins to experience more and more emotions. Over the next two centuries, Andrew learns more and more about humanity as he tries to stop his creators from destroying him.

These kinds of movies work so much better than those that have sharp edges, but with Chris Columbus in the director's chair, Bicentennial Man has become a good feel-good film. A pity, because human robots and AI and the associated dilemmas can be portrayed very interestingly, such as in Ex Machina. Anyway, Robin Williams is okay, although that 'one...' he speaks with is very annoying. And that teacher from Matilda also okay, so well it didn't get very annoying. The most remarkable thing for me was the production and make-up. That looked cool and pretty! By the way, I've never read anything by Asimov, but I don't think his stories lend themselves well to a movie...

Bicentennial Man begins as a sci-fi family film with some humorous notes: a family buys a robot as a domestic helper. But gradually it develops into a more serious/drama side. The film has become a kind of Boyhood (fortunately less boring), but one that follows a robot during its first 200 years of life. As the technology improves over the years, the robot continues to improve itself. A nice variant among the artificial intelligence films, although it cannot avoid some clichés. A beautiful and warm film that is easy to watch. 3.5*

I'm used to seeing robots that turn into humans in a movie become terrible monsters that want to take over themselves and destroy humanity. So it takes some getting used to when a robot that turns into a human becomes a nice person. And it takes even more getting used to when that robot even turns into a Robin Williams.
Credibility is of course hard to find with this theme, but you should not expect that either. After all, you don't do that with the robots that turn into monsters. Still, it is an amusing film that certainly captivated me.
