This is definitely more of a comedy than a drama, because even though this "traversée" takes place in Paris occupied by the Germans, the adventures of our 2 plant tractors, the many funny dialogues and situations, which very subtly reflect war conditions and behavior of the little man who wanted to keep his head above water, are certainly of a predominantly comic nature.

Jean Gabin and Bourvil are truly excellent in their roles and there is also a certain Louis de Funès in the run-up to his later stellar career.

A classic that is in the French collective memory...

1942. An unemployed taxi driver and a mysterious painter smuggle four suitcases of pork through occupied Paris. They must fend off collaborationist police, Germans and hungry dogs in this nocturnal venture. Bourvil and Gabin give strong roles, which makes the film a kind of "buddy movie" avant la lettre. Small role for De Funès. It's certainly not a full-blooded comedy; several times the film comes close to war drama. This film adaptation of a novella by Marcel Aymé also describes the difficult living conditions of ordinary people during the German occupation.

A gem starring 2 giants of French cinema. Gabin and Bourvil form a perfect tandem in this mix of drama and black comedy. The cynical undertone of the film appears very modern and made the film controversial at the time. Especially since it concerns the war history of occupied France, which was anyway sensitive ten years after the end of WWII. Beautifully depicted with many night scenes. This is enjoyment. And then Louis de Funès can also participate in a well-received supporting role.
