Watched it again, now on Blu-ray.

Even more impressed than during previous viewings.

What struck me most was how beautifully the film used the familiar Spaghetti Western landscapes around Almeria, Spain, and seamlessly blended them with Mexican locations.

With every viewing the film seems to get better.

I'm already leaning slightly towards the full 5* rating

In 1971, the inner and outer aspects of the Western were heavily influenced by New Hollywood and, of course, Italian Westerns. This resulted in films that were dirtier, more cynical, and grimmer than the Westerns of the old school. Valdez is Coming is one such film.

A Western and a revenge film. Burt Lancaster plays the title role. An excellent performance. For once, Lancaster isn't playing the cheerful macho with a fearless air. He portrays Bob Valdez. A character with a modest and humble demeanor, a somewhat hesitant way of moving, and no smiles, yet despite his reserved appearance, he commands a commanding presence. Valdez is an intriguing character.

Director Edwin Sherin is deeply engaged with the inner lives of his characters. He provides motivation. His theater background may be to blame. The lack of action and the poignant dialogue are typical of the film, but they also complement the languid narrative style. Not at all annoying.

The film is imbued with a grimy and ominous atmosphere. Had the film been produced ten years earlier, the atmosphere would likely have been more palatable, and the character of Valdez would likely have been a celebrated hero. Now he's an avenger, without any glamorous aura. A misanthropic loner. Lancaster plays him well. He plays with restraint. That pose lends Valdez a great deal of authenticity.

The film was shot in Spain. Very fashionable at the time, and a guarantee for beautiful landscapes. A great film.

A decent film in which a Mexican-American sheriff takes on a wealthy landowner. A simple revenge story, but the interplay is quite well-developed. Not bad, but despite its raw edge, this western barely manages to distinguish itself from other similar westerns. The casting of Burt Lancaster as a Mexican is (in this day and age) problematic.
