Super tycoon Alonzo Hawk proudly unveils the plans for his latest masterpiece: the tallest office building in the world. Although the building will look completely out of place in the heart of San Francisco, he still wants to start work. Somewhat entertaining sequel to the successful first part of Herbie's long series. Jones is a bit missed here though. Not a high-flyer, but not a failure as a youth film at the time. Average.

Compared to the first part, the story is a lot bland, corny, nonsensical and unrealistic. But the reasonably smooth elaboration and the many developments ensure that it is somewhat entertaining. Hawk's dream is especially entertaining.
Another plus are veterans Hayes (grandma Steinmetz) and Wynn (magnate Hwak) who have strong personalities. Unfortunately, in terms of personality, Herbie is a lot flatter and less present. And Herbie is now what makes this series so special.
As a stand-alone film 3.0* but as a Herbie film I don't get further than 2.0*.

I know Herbie like many from my childhood. Even though the movies were before my time. Herbie Rides Again is the least part of the series. The love bug has obviously been a good start, but the movies after this one were especially nice with the arrival of technician Wheely Applegate (Don Knotts). There the car is even more of a racing car, by the way, just as well with its cures. And it comes out better. Here it is more like a dog in the shape of a car and the whole thing is rather outdated. Fun for children in its day, but ultimately too good to enjoy it now.
I admit that the story and the actors are not bad. But overall it lacks the necessary salt and pepper. And Herbie has seen better movies.
