The School of Rock plot

"He just landed the gig of his life: 5th grade."

Troublemaker and guitarist Dewey Finn dreams of winning the Battle of the Bands rock competition. However, his colleagues throw him out of the group. Dewey is now depressed in his house, whose rent has not been paid for months. When his roommate Ned receives a phone call with an offer to fill in as a teacher, Dewey poses as Ned and begins teaching at the prestigious Horace Green Elementary School. The strict headmaster Mullins follows Dewey with suspicion. The guitarist may not have been fond of teaching, but he does teach his students a love for rock 'n roll.

Why don't you go on a diet?

Because I like to eat! Is that such a crime?

Watched for the second time and enjoyed it again. Very nice video. I understand the lukewarm responses here and there. It never really colors outside the lines and is perhaps just too good. But fun is fun. And Jack Black certainly carries the film with his enormous energy, but the supporting roles of Joan Cusack as the stiff director and Sarah Silverman as the controlling girlfriend (which Black's buddy is quite upset about) and the kids are fun too. As a non-rock connoisseur certainly enjoyable for me. And secretly, the film also portrays the current rock industry that has been ruined by commerce. See, for example, that long-haired boy from No Vacancy, who replaced Black, squirming in front of the girls in the audience. While really rocking, as the film suggests, means sticking it to the man!

The film is so mainstream that you can't really see Linklater's signature anywhere, but as a director he has managed to get the most out of his actors, young and old.

Jack Black... as a musician in Tenacious D I always found him annoying. As an actor, especially in the more comedic roles, I always really like him. And this role is really made for him. As a rock 'n roll aficionado, he gets to introduce a class of kids to the world of rock music, and it's clear that he really enjoys this. He can fully display his wacky behavior, as well as his not undeserved guitar playing and vocals. Due to the good chemistry of Black, School of Rock, despite the predictable story, has become a very enjoyable film.

Perhaps my own experiences play a part in this. I am a teacher, and I also play in a number of rock bands. So both school life and musician life are familiar to me. The contrasts between them can be particularly great, as is caricaturedly magnified in this film, but they can also complement each other. Black teaches his students to stand up for themselves, to find their own voice, and sees a quality in every child. And daring to be yourself, isn't that the ultimate freedom that is so valued in rock n' roll?

The film is a feast of recognition for rock lovers: Sabbath, Deep Purple, Kiss, the Who, Sex Pistols, Hendrix, Ac/dc... it all comes along. And that combined with a comical story and a beautiful message makes this film a big 4* for me.
