“You've ruined it for me, you know.”

“Ruined what?”

“Being alone.”

Nice classic. Out of Africa is way too long and not much happens, but John Barry's music and the beautiful images of the African landscape make up for a lot. The biggest problem I have with the film is why it was made in the first place. What makes Karen Blixen's story so special? After seeing the movie I'm still not sure. Streep is also overacting again, and that awful accent almost made me want to turn off the sound. Luckily I got used to it, because I wouldn't have wanted to miss John Barry's wonderful music. And Redford is once again excellent.

Haha, those Oscars anyway.

To be honest I didn't expect too much from this, I didn't know beforehand that this was such a big Oscar winner. From a distance, the film looked pretty dull, but I didn't really have a solid idea of what to expect.

Streep really sucks in this movie. With a kind of Allo Allo accent and little subtle acting she has to carry the film, but even 160 minutes later she could still be stolen from me. The wooden Redford in front of her doesn't help me at all.

It's terribly corny, extremely boring, audiovisually also a complete graveyard (best cinematography, seriously?). And that drags on indefinitely. The only bit of joy is knowing that at least I never have to see this one again, because obviously I'm half a glass full person.

0.5*
