It has always been from the beginning : her death or mine...

Only recommended for those who really love history, because I found some prior knowledge helpful. Check Wiki. A faithful biographical film adaptation of the tragic Mary Stuart, with British acting power such as an impressive Glenda Jackson who flawlessly plays the manipulative Queen Elizabeth, and a still young Timothy Dalton as Mary's second husband, who clearly didn't have all of them together.

It is primarily a film about all sorts of political intrigues at the Scottish court and between two rival queens, but it teaches that these events would nevertheless lead to the "Union of the Crowns", a symbolic unification of the country. A beautifully filmed drama that stays focused.

I liked this one better than the partly overlapping content Elizabeth: The Golden Age, which I found a bit kitschy. Mary, Queen of Scots is a bit more traditionally developed, but that's nice for this kind of historical story.

Strong roles of the two queens, especially their dialogues (which I just read never actually happened). They deserved a bit more screentime. For the rest, the intrigues sometimes become a bit too much of a good thing and Timothy Dalton is very slurry in his role.

Nevertheless, worth a small 3.5*.
