Beautifully true (set in the late 1940s) Drama film with a gripping, captivating and even a bit gripping (because of the racism) story.
The execution of the story was also good and that from the first to the last minute (takes about 120 minutes). Here and there the story is perhaps a bit cliché and predictable. The fact that this film is so good is also due to the cast with, among other things, an excellent playing Cuba Gooding Jr. (as Carl Brashear, who becomes the first colored person to become a diver in the US Navy), Robert De Niro (as authoritarian diving instructor Master Chief Billy Sunday) and Charlize Theron (as Gwen Sunday ). The latter of course also contributes to the visual aspect (with regularly beautiful images, both above and under water) of this film.
All in all a good and entertaining Drama film, which knows how to captivate, entertain and move. This is arguably the best movie starring Cuba Gooding Jr. starring and it might be time to revisit this movie.

A good movie that most viewers will enjoy. Initially, it is still quite about the resistance that many whites encountered when a black man/woman entered their circles. Until they get to know the person in question and then that is often overcome. You can also see that in this film, although there is always "white trash" left, such as the commander of the military diving school.
Thinking about the movie, there's always Carl's fight against prejudice about his color, his later disability and I suspect, a fight that's heightened by his father's statement; "Always persevere if you believe you are in your right"
A nice 7!

Beautiful true story about the themes of racial hatred, perseverance, prejudice and making choices. Good acting. Funny that some find the story unbelievable.... it is completely based on truth, even the 'less credible' parts. That's what makes the movie interesting. The music is sometimes a bit 'American', but that doesn't detract from the film for me. Of course the ending is a bit predictable (otherwise there wouldn't have been a movie made about it) and yes, sometimes it's sweet. But I especially admired how tenacious, stubborn and fanatical someone can be to realize his dream. At the expense of.... basically everything. Four stars!
