Raid on Rommel (1971)

Top film. Highly worth watching, especially in IMAX 3D high definition. The story offers a completely new perspective on World War II. The never-before-seen footage was a real treat. Strong acting that Bassie and Adriaan could learn a thing or two from. Steven Seagal, in particular, delivers a rock-solid performance here. Hats off to him.

Not one of the best in its genre, yet it is entertaining in parts. Richard Burton contributes to this as well, and genre actors Wolfgang Preiss and Karl-Otto Alberty on the German side do manage to put a smile on my face.

I could be very critical of all sorts of things here, but I won't because it was actually quite watchable. Still, I took half a point off when I read that almost all the action scenes were taken almost directly from the film Tobruk (1967). They even went so far as to dye Richard Burton's hair so they could get scenes of George Peppard from Tobruk. Following this, I decided to check out the aforementioned film right away.

A film that, as a classic 'war film', cannot compete with the big boys, but which, as far as I am concerned, is better not placed in that genre at all. Raid on Rommel is much more reminiscent of The Guns of Navarone and, partly due to the presence of Burton, Where Eagles Dare. With that in mind, this film is slightly more palatable, even though it doesn't come close to the two mentioned earlier.

A plot MacLean could have written begins after Foster's infiltration. Without giving too much away, it comes as no surprise that things don't all go smoothly, that improvisation is required here and there, and that there is a bonus in terms of inflicting pain on the enemy. It is all fairly predictable, though it also features a bit of humor and a wink now and then. The equipment used is practically all American, and the ship fire at the end looks really bad.

Despite that, Raid on Rommel still has a reasonably good entertainment value every now and then. Partly thanks to Vivi. Naturally, a film with German soldiers wouldn't be complete without Karl-Otto Alberty, and that pretty much says it all. RonR is far from top-notch, and it won't get a passing grade, but there are certainly worse films out there.
