I didn't find much to enjoy about it. It started off reasonably well, but after endless rambling, my thoughts wandered so much that at some point I really didn't know who was who anymore. And the few fights were almost even more boring than the conversations, so they didn't wake me up either.

Unfortunately a meager 2*

Historical epic about the establishment of the Tokugawa shogunate. The poisoning of the shogun triggered a bloody power struggle between his two sons. All of this was an orchestrated conspiracy by the noblemen who were in charge of daily administration. Whether it all unfolded as depicted in the film remains questionable, especially the bewildering ending. It primarily demonstrates that the nobility was capable of just about any cruelty to retain power.

It is a pretty strong film in terms of acting, and Fukasaku brings 17th-century Japan to life with costumes, hairstyles, rituals, and sometimes grand scenes. The actor playing Lord Tajima, in particular, made a deep impression. The action scenes were solid, but nothing more than that. The many characters also made it a slightly heavier viewing experience.
