As in many films from that time , the death scene, in which someone, very extremely, repents, goes a bit wrong.
The only flaw of this excellent film that brings an atmospheric sketch of a chaotic day at the police station, with its small but painful dramas and also a very small touch of humor and finally with a touching relationship drama (which emphasizes on Catholic and Puritan America, or at least how it is presented).
Central figure is a very convincing Kirk Douglas as the zero-tolerance detective but also as the man disenchanted in his principles.
A nice piece of cinema, best as a fitting tribute to the passing of a great old Hollywood legend.

good drama in which we get to know the vicissitudes and personal problems of 1 detective at the police station
Douglas plays well here the hard policeman who can only see everything in black and white and that train of thought eventually becomes his downfall.
The rest of the cast is fine in their roles as puzzle pieces that shape its main story.
Excellent psychological drama.

I had to get into the last movie because it's quite unusual. Detective story is a film about a day in a police station. The film has a stage origin and is set entirely in a police station. Wyler turns it into a film by doing a lot with movement. Both the actors and the cameramen. After an hour the film gets a bit more focus and we mainly go to Mcleod, a role played by Douglas who is not the most subtle actor of his time, but which I like to see in moderation.

His story reflects much of the time. Both that he cares even more about a past than many would now, and because of the psycho-analytical suggestion in his view of his father. That was very hip in Hollywood. Especially insanely well directed with scenes that are put under tension by things like timing.

It's a shame the movie chooses an ending where McLeod dies, that's an easy subterfuge. An ending where his demons are exposed and he has to live with them would have been much stronger. That's why I'm not going to four stars.
