The story of a group of raccoon dogs with the ability to transform into something or someone. With the disappearance of their living space, they have to be creative to defend themselves against concrete construction. An ecological story, therefore, not the only one from Ghibli. There is certainly nothing wrong with that. Pompoko is particularly impressive with the fun creatures and the accessible fantasy. Visually it is not always that special and the film lacks the charm of most other Ghibli films. Nevertheless, it is still a fun film with an interesting story.

Very nice review.

One of the least seen Ghiblis I think, although I have no idea why. Takahata rarely disappoints, here too it is striking that he actually handles his material better than a Miyazaki. This may be an eco-driven film, but it never feels really stiff or pushy.

Visually it is of course well worth the effort, even for a film that is almost 30 years old. Some scenes that stand out (as befits an anime, a great parade), some "special skills" of the raccoons that are indelible, and above all nice characters and a smooth implementation of the story.

Anyway, thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a shame Takahata wasn't even more active. He left a great legacy, but he hasn't made a lot of movies, especially when you consider the length of his career. That makes a movie like Pom Poko even more special of course.

4.0* and a extended review

This is a very entertaining movie for an hour. Nice setting, funny creatures, visually well drawn and genuinely funny moments (when during a minute of silence around the opponent all raccoons burst out laughing and go to party - black humor but very witty). But the film simply does not last for two hours. Many scenes after that feel superfluous and the central plot is released a bit, so that the urgency in the film also disappears and it all becomes a bit loose and also simply less interesting, less entertaining and prone to boredom. The ending is still beautiful. 3.0*.
