This is one of my favorite road movies, a real feel good movie. The chemistry between Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin is superb, the script continues to fascinate, the dialogues are very comical and there is even a touching moment at the end of the story. De Niro proves that in addition to his gangster roles, he can also be funny.

Crime film that is actually more of a comedy. The clichéd action scenes fall by the wayside, but the spirit of the film lies in the unparalleled act of De Niro and Grodin. Funny situations and especially witty, very concrete but also phlegmatic dialogues.

Pleasantly surprised. Thought I was going to experience yet another De Niro crime clash but it got much better.

Nice to see such an old crime comedy again... with the slightly younger De Niro.

He plays a reckless stubborn cop Jack Walsh who, because he is not always liked by the normal authorities and because he has been cheated by his former corps; to become a private investigator. Fortunately, his client still gives him enough jobs and he is also ahead of the regular police. Now he is ordered to arrest a certain con man on the other side of America in exchange for a nice barrel.

This scammer/bookkeeper is Joe The Duke Mardukas, who all in all seems to be a Robin Hood-like figure and who is still quite a bright man. But Jack only thinks about his money and he would and must return to the other side of the States. It soon becomes clear that Joe is not only interested in Jack and who this bright man stole the money from. From the certain high-ranking mob boss Jimmy Serano; again masterfully played by Dennis Farina. A local rival and the FBI also spot a price on The Duke's head, and an undercover team is already wiretapping phone calls.

And so Jack takes Joe along in tow, and almost always in handcuffs. And not without a hectic road trip across America, because Joe "don't like flying". A direct route is almost impossible, because they constantly have to avoid their competitors.

This results in a nice feel-good road movie, with enough action and funny dialogues. Robert De Niro is already good, but Charles Grodin simply steals the show and is not at all into the fight, where De Niro is yawning or cynical almost throughout the film. The two hours pass in an instant, until the heartwarming end.

Pure 80s entertainment; nice for a change.

4.5*
