Joel (Jim Carrey) is shocked that his girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet) has had all her memories of their rather tumultuous relationship erased. Desperate, he contacts the inventor of the conscious process, Dr. Howard Mierzwiak (Tom Wilkinson), in order to have Clementine erased from his own memory. But as Joel's memories of Clementine begin to fade, he begins to rediscover his love for her. He tries with all his might to counteract the process that takes place deep in his brain.

What an absolutely terrible piece of shit movie.
I don't understand what everyone sees in this. It's probably because the story isn't told linearly; that always works well.
And yet, this film had everything to be good. Kaufman at the helm, a renowned music video director in the chair, and Carrey who can deliver a good performance when it really matters. It is a shame that it devolved into a bland, sappy vehicle, featuring a string of child stars (led by that Disney dwarf), annoying music, and art direction unworthy of a music video director. It is, after all, always the wrong directors who make the switch (come on Mr. Cunningham, please...).
A big mess that I don't wish to waste any more words on, and just try to forget as quickly as possible. 1* for a few nice ideas and 1 beautiful scene (in the beach house).

A rather strange film, which is, however, extremely original. The film is well put together, but I didn't find it all that engaging: at times it was really just a series of boring scenes. The acting performances, however, were good: both Carrey and Winslet come across convincingly and do more than a good job.

I am dealing with two problems.
The first thing is: I don't like these kinds of films (Inceptionis another example of that), although I must admit thatEternal Sunshine...is cleverly put together.
My second problem is Jim Carrey. After having seen a few of his films, I tend to skip straight to the next one whenever I see his name on the cover. The high rating for this film has persuaded me not to do that this time.
I don't regret it, because this film gets a solid passing grade from me too, thanks to: none other than Jim Carrey, who delivers a fantastic performance here. I wouldn't have expected anything less from Kate Winslet. I have actually never caught her acting poorly.
The story doesn't appeal to me. The acting of both lead actors, on the other hand, does all the more. 3*
