You don't need to see this movie for the story. Refers to the labor unrest in Italy in the sixties and seventies. It starts with a strike, with Romy Schneider as strike leader. But the film doesn't even make it clear exactly what the strike is for. The strike leader has an affair with her boss, the director of the factory against whom there is a strike. Then there are quite a few side lines that are also not very clear. No, of course you watch this film for Romy Schneider, then at her best, and with little work in France. So she had to tackle everything, including this one, in which she could hardly use her acting talent and was outshone by 'old hand' Ugo Tognazzi. But oh, how beautiful she was...

The social struggle between workers and employers is reduced here to the struggle/interaction between Romy Schneider (as the leader of the proletariat) and Ugo Tognazzi (as a factory director with working-class roots). In this respect, there's a lack of realism about what such a strike and negotiations between workers and employers actually entail. The union isn't even mentioned. We do see a more symbolic approach, however, with a beautiful, passionate working-class woman who shakes a settled factory director. This is underscored by Ennio Morricone's magnificent score.

The film ultimately has a cynical undertone and ending. When it becomes clear that Tognazzi's humanitarian efforts are not appreciated by his fellow industrialists, he is murdered, though it is not explicitly stated who ordered his murder. But it is obvious that it is an order from the elite. Anyone who does not fall in line with the elite must pay with their lives.

Oh yes, Romy Schneider is breathtakingly beautiful here.
