Left without a permanent address after serving a prison sentence, single mother Molly [Posy Sterling] is deemed unable to care for her children, Leo [Luke Howitt] and Ava [Tegan-Mia Stanley Rhoads]. She could regain custody once she gets her life back on track, but desperation and a deep longing to be with her children lead to systematic behavior that seems to ruin her chances. Poppy's best friend Amina [Idil Ahmed], also a single mother struggling to provide for her children, is the only one who can connect with her. The theme is certainly not new, but Hudson avoids the temptation of an analysis of the care system, lending greater psychological and emotional depth to her protagonist, powerfully portrayed by Sterling.
