Hupla, very good comedy 
In the absence of the men who went to the front during WWII, a chocolate industrialist puts together women's teams to provide the people with some entertainment, but that turns out to be only temporary, because women don't belong in this sport. Mostly enjoyed Tom Hanks (and had a good laugh out loud a few times) as the ex-baseball player (now a dirty drunk) hired as the girls' team coach. . It's all against his will. However, he soon begins to believe in their abilities. Central characters are Dottie and her sister Kit, who is frustrated because she is always in Dottie's shadow. A few others are also worth checking out: Marla the ladyboy, the free-spirited Mae (a role for Madonna, of course) and just for the name, Betty Spaghetti.
This sympathetic film will especially please the lovers of feel-good, because it is a film that certainly conjures up a wide smile.

You may wonder why A League of Their Own is part of the Columbia Classics 4K Ultra HD Collection. In addition to titles like Gandhi, Dr. You don't expect Strangelove and Lawrence of Arabia so soon this comedic sports film about the very first baseball competition for women. Apart from the historical importance of course.
Tom Hanks plays the unsympathetic coach of the women's team and Geena Davis is his star player. Further roles of Madonna, among others, barely stick. This is related to the enormous shimmer that apparently must have been contagious on the set under Hanks' leadership. The acting is sometimes turned on so thick that it can annoy you.
Now baseball in the Netherlands means absolutely nothing compared to the hysteria that prevails in the US, but still. Why a place in this collection? Perhaps because the film is based on a mainly female cast. Perhaps the director was the first woman to direct a blockbuster; the much nicer Big, also with Tom Hanks.
The jokes seem corny, despite the presence of Rosie O'Donnell and the film is very clichéd. The strength lies mainly in the final piece when facts and fiction become more and more mixed into reality. When the real ladies appear on the scene, you tend to feel a lump in your throat. That is well done again.

A League of Their Own has been digitally restored and released in 4K UHD as part of The Columbia Classics 4K Ultra HD Collection box. A collector's item consisting of 6 films, 17 discs and an 80-page English book. The film has an Atmos soundtrack and as a bonus includes a documentary and 3 episodes of the TV series from the 90s.

Good film in which the women take over baseball when the men fight at the front. The film is set in the United States during the Second World War. Not your standard sports movie (it's not really about winning that last game). Entertaining from start to finish, it all looks good and there are quite a few laughs too. A fine cast with Tom Hanks as the most sympathetic drunk asshole and Geena Davis should not be left unmentioned. Easily 3.5 stars.
