Heavy stuff and a bit slow, but visually impressive and featuring a strong performance from the recently retired Daniel Day-Lewis. Of course, a clear case of nepotism, since his son is directing, but hey, it's still good to have him back. He's and remains a fantastic actor. The rest of the (otherwise excellent) cast pales a bit in comparison. The script is sometimes pretentious, and the plot isn't very exciting, but Day-Lewis's umpteenth memorable performance and the often surreal visuals elevate the film just above average.

Years ago, Ray [Daniel Day-Lewis] left his family for a life of isolation, fearing reprisals for an incident during The Troubles. His brother [Sean Bean] tracks him down and tries to persuade him to return to his wife [Samantha Morton] and son [Samuel Bottomley], who is spiraling out of control. Daniel Day-Lewis co-wrote the screenplay for his first film since Phantom Thread (2017), with his son, who also directed. Bean’s understated performance gives Day-Lewis ample room to express his most intense side in this meandering, depressing drama that treads well-trodden paths and culminates in a pretentious, symbolic resolution. The title is a clue.
