SpongeBob SquarePants reaches an emotional high when he finally gets high enough to ride a roller coaster. When he doesn't dare, he decides to prove his courage to Mr. Krabs by following the Flying Dutchman, a mysterious and reckless ghost pirate. Disappointment of the year. I barely cracked a smile the entire movie. I didn't like the animation style either. Now you know why episodes are never that long; 90 minutes is simply too long to keep things interesting. Or am I getting old?

The latest entry in the Spongebob universe follows the lines of previous work fairly closely. The first film remains the best chapter; everything that came after it plays it safe and has a flawed story. Search for SquarePants is no different. The film makes absolutely no sense and relies mainly on a few funny individual bits and creative animation techniques. The pace is incredibly fast, and the jokes come so quickly that it's hard to get bored, but it's certainly not truly great.

Spongebob [Tom Kenny] has finally grown up enough to call himself a "Big Boy" and take a ride on a spectacular roller coaster. But he doesn't dare. Mr. Krabs [Clancy Brown] encourages Spongebob with stories about a "swashbuckling" diploma and inspires Spongebob to overcome his fears. But in the process, he falls victim to a curse passed on to him by The Flying Dutchman [Mark Hamill]. Unless... A lot of by now rather stale jokes in the extremely busy, hyperkinetic style we're all familiar with - and which is starting to get boring. That probably won't bother today's kids much.
