Somewhat disappointing reprise of 'the grabber'.
While I considered part 1 a true Stephen King-style masterpiece, this one didn't quite live up to expectations. Still, it's worth it if you've seen part 1.

The film's atmosphere is one of its strengths. The downside is that the story might not have lent itself well to a sequel.

The posthumous Grabber is less scary than the (living) mysterious Grabber from part 1. He also appears too often, which lessens the impact. The black telephone does give you goosebumps, but sometimes feels a bit forced. The choice to continue with the same characters works reasonably well. But you really need to have seen part 1 to make coffee of it.

Some characters come across as very flat. Although that's also somewhat in keeping with the more old-fashioned style.

A pass, but the phone may remain on the hook after this second part.

3 stars.

A high-quality sequel from the capable hands of director Scott Derrickson, though it's been a while since he's delivered something truly great. The Black Phone 2 shifts Mason Thames's lead role to Madeleine McGraw, both of whom handle two very complex roles brilliantly. The supporting cast is somewhat less significant, but still contributes significantly to the story. Derrickson regularly delivers a number of skillfully constructed scenes and a strong atmosphere, but the film never becomes truly nail-bitingly suspenseful. Moreover, Ethan Hawke is less intimidating than in the previous film, perhaps because the concept is much more far-fetched this time around. Fortunately, the film remains enjoyable and offers enough to justify its existence, but you have to be able to accept it.

While "The Black Phone" from 2021 was still a good film, this unnecessary sequel is simply mediocre. The story barely captivated or entertained me, and it never really got exciting. Before the intermission, the film was also soporific. The highlight actually came during the intermission with a delicious pumpkin spice latte macchiato. After the intermission, the film did improve somewhat, and more happened (including on the frozen lake). Visually it looked beautiful with the snow and winter camp setting and we also see the original cast members again (now four years older) and when I saw Jeremy Davies, I kept thinking of Charles Manson, whom he also played in the good film "Helter Skelter (2004)".
