The Lost Boys plot

"Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. It's fun to be a vampire."

Michael and Sam move with their mother to the coastal town of Santa Carla. At the local amusement park, Michael meets a cute girl. At the same time, a group of motorcyclists appears. The girl gets on the back of one of them. David, the leader, asks if Michael is coming. It will be a trip Michael will never forget. His brother Sam has also discovered that strange things are happening in Santa Carla, because it is full of... vampires. Sam notices that Michael is also doing weird, strange things and calls his friends to investigate. The three boys go to war.

In 1985 Tom Holland made vampires a bit cool again with his vampire film Fright Night. And that atmosphere was continued by many. In addition, the success of The Goonies from 1985 also resulted in many copies, such as The Monster Squad. The ultimate combination between Fright Night and The Goonies is these The Lost Boys. It was originally going to be even more of a Goonies-esque movie, but director Joel Schumacher demanded that the main characters become more teenagers. Still, the atmosphere is all Goonies - which is of course enhanced by having Corey Feldman in a supporting role. But the 80s atmosphere is even stronger; only based on the haircuts in this film you can say that you almost never get more 80s than with The Lost Boys.

The Lost Boys is amusing, comedic teen horror. The film invariably alternates between two protagonists: Jason Patric as Michael (and we know his name is Michael, because his name is mentioned fifty times a minute) and his little brother Corey Haim. You would expect the part with the vampires to be the most interesting in these kinds of movies, but the moments with Haim are the most fun when he investigates what's going on in that small picture. The part with Patric and the gang of vampires, led by Kiefer Sutherland, is actually remarkably boring and also with remarkably little humor. Then scenes with the Frog brothers at the dinner table are a lot more fun, for example. During the climax everything comes together and fortunately the film is again very entertaining. Only that during the second act could have been a little more.

3.5 stars.

Vampires with hair metal hair.

And yet they are terribly cool. The whole setting in Santa Clara with the permanent fairground is very atmospheric, with the soundtrack also giving that little bit of extra atmosphere. The song People are strange is still stuck in my head.

Saw this film for the first time in 1987 and now revised it years later on the basis of Eye's Choice van Koolhoven.

Surprisingly, the film hasn't lost any power. In fact, it surprised me how smoothly it all went. In addition to the humorous boys' book angle, there are still a few nice threatening scenes.

Kiefer Sutherland is extremely charismatic as the leader of the vampire gang. I would have fallen for it too and joined those leeches.
