Enjoyable, but I expected more. The film scores most points with its absurd, darkly comic humor, particularly through Mads Mikkelsen's character. The first half is stronger in this respect than the second, but there are some truly funny moments where you're practically torn between laughing and crying. Because that's the second thing Anders Thomas Jensen does so well: you laugh with the characters, but you never laugh at them. There's always a certain sensitivity and respect present, and the characters' inner worlds—their pasts, their traumas, and how they became who they are—are effectively integrated into the story in the latter half of the film.

I wasn't as impressed that the film—after a rather enjoyable first half hour—staggers for a very long time in the parental home and never really leaves. There are some entertaining scenes and twists, but it also suffers from tediousness and repetition. Moreover, I found Nikolaj Lie Kaas, who constantly walks around with the same angry face, a bit unnerving after a while. He's not allowed to display much other emotion for most of the film, which is a shame. And one final emotional point of criticism: I found the switch in genres and styles a bit abrupt at times, making the brutal and almost vicious elements in the violent final act feel a bit out of place. However, that dark, absurdist humor is the common thread throughout the film.

To end on a positive note, Mikkelsen is truly fantastic here. Incredibly dry, deadpan funny, absurd, pathetic... Manfred is absolutely the star of the film. 3 stars.

Just before he's arrested for a multi-million dollar robbery, Anker (Nikolaj Lie Kaas) asks his brother Manfred (Mads Mikkelsen) to bury the loot. Fifteen years later, he wants the money back. However, Manfred has a personality disorder and now lives as John (H.) Lennon. Moreover, he can't (or won't?) reveal the whereabouts of the money. Meanwhile, Anker's former ruthless accomplice (Nicolas Bro) comes to claim the money. Full of unique, well-developed characters played by an excellent cast (including Bodil Jørgensen as Anker and Manfred's sister). The mix of comedy and brutal violence isn't always effective, but the ensemble acting is exemplary.
