Nakahara Chūya died in 1937, much too early, at the age of 30, from tuberculosis. He was one of the first modernist poets whose work would gain much greater appreciation in the decades after his death. In addition to his penetrating style, this is one of the reasons why he is sometimes called the Japanese Rimbaud. In “Yasuko, Songs of Days Past,” Negishi Kichitarô evokes a period from the poet’s youth, when in his late teens he fell in love with the aspiring actress Hasegawa Yasuko. Their relationship stimulated Nakahara’s creativity, but was also hampered by the presence of the older and more sophisticated critic Kobayashi Hideo.
