Dirty Angels plot
When a group of schoolgirls are taken hostage in Afghanistan, an American soldier named Jake joins an all-female commando unit to rescue them. Mediocre action film. The story is simple. The execution is fairly average. There is some build-up but character development is neglected. The film is quite watchable but unfortunately there is little real tension. The action is dominant and is visually presented reasonably well, but is never memorable or of any high level. The acting is otherwise fine. Nothing special. 2.5/3.0

Perhaps this is one of those films that needs to grow on you - one that you only start to appreciate after you've let it sink in for a while and then watch it again. The story itself is a bit shaky here and there, but we normally find that to be appropriate for the genre. Just as the main characters' degeneration is part of it, and we're used to it - if they're men. But outside of Hollywood, we've all known for a long time that not every woman is a weak little princess.
Too bad that the film otherwise runs very obediently within the usual Hollywood clichés. That you know in advance who will reach the finish line - not exactly according to the formula of the 'final girl', because it is not a horror film after all, but it does seem very similar. Or that the bad guys go as whites, except when it has to be exciting. Also that the bad guys remain too one-dimensional, and also the lines they have to speak feel unnatural.
Still, all that doesn't make it a bad film. There may be more content than the average shooting film, but that has to sink in. Until then, I'll just keep a cautious average.
