"...Everything You've Heard is True"
Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham) is employed as the competent court composer of Emperor Joseph II. When Mozart (Tom Hulce) arrives at court, a stunned Salieri must determine that the divine musical inspiration he seeks for himself has been bestowed upon a riotous, brutal jester. Mad with jealousy, he decides to destroy Mozart by any means necessary, perhaps even murder.

The nice thing about this film is that it is fairly frivolous, and more than a dull biography. Mozart is portrayed fairly eccentrically, but is quite enjoyable. It was a bit of a shame that the story was portrayed in a very black and white way, but was otherwise easy to digest.
Also nicely portrayed for a costume drama, although there is little really startling to report. Just looked neat, in a not too musty way.
Less is that the film, certainly halfway through, repeats itself a lot. I did not find the operas too fascinating, Mozart hardly appeals to me as an artist anyway. Towards the end I also found it less and less interesting, although that was largely due to the too long playing time.
Didn't think it was as bad as feared, although I had expected something different based on some comments. Slightly more frivolous than the average biopic, but in the end it stays within the lines.

I understand that a movie like this can be boring for people who don't listen to classical music much. It gives a whole extra layer to this film if you know and appreciate Mozart's music well. I'm lucky with that.
The theme of this film is a theme that everyone can identify with. Everyone wants to achieve something, rise above mediocrity and know fame. If you want that so badly, but it doesn't work out, a person can be very tormented as a result. This is incredibly well filmed in the scene where Mozart makes a variation on Salieri's march.
This is one of those movies that I can watch a number of scenes over and over again without getting bored. The characters are very well acted and the costumes are beautiful. I give the full five stars.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was reportedly quite an obnoxious, childish and arrogant person. Whether this corresponds with the character from the film with his sharp laugh, I leave it up to you. Renowned worldwide as an unlimited music virtuoso, it appears that he has never been an unspeakable figure. Especially his death and burial will stay with me for a while. Destitute, he left earthly life and had to say goodbye via a sober burial and mass grave. The contrast could hardly be greater for one of the greatest musical geniuses of all time.
The film itself starts from the point of view of Antonio Salieri, the court composer of Emperor Joseph II. He was less talented than Mozart - who did not come to his lessons like even Beethoven - as this manifested itself in jealousy, envy and hatred of Mozart. The story is told through Salieri's memoirs, like a kind of confession to a priest, where he puts his soul on the table.
Tom Hulce put down a wonderful rendition of Mozart. The actor reminds me a bit of the Flemish Jonas Van Geel, almost a lookalike. Mozart emerges as a bon vivant with annoying traits. But Salieri is not just a bad guy either. His jealousy is not inhumane, just a painful observation. It is precisely those scenes in which Salieris' feelings are portrayed with the beautiful oeuvres of Mozart in the background that make the film so strong and connected.
Of course it is an understatement to love the many classic compostions. Simply beautiful and a real added value. The decor and furnishings were also of a high level. Thick 3.5* and even worth a 4.0*.
