The world-famous quintessential indoor cat who hates Mondays and loves lasagna ventures outside for a wild adventure. His father, the scruffy street cat Vic, shows up unexpectedly. Garfield and his dog friend Odie are then forced to leave their life behind them and join Vic for a wildly funny, risky heist.

Garfield [Chris Pratt] came to live with Jon Arbuckle [Nicholas Hoult] after his father Vic [Samuel L. Jackson] left him in a restaurant alley. Garfield is now grown up, lazy, fat and he lets his dog Odie [Harvey Guillén] do just about everything that requires 'physical effort' for him. Until Roland [Brett Goldstein] and Nolan [Bowen Yang] kidnap him and reunite him with his father. Vic owes a debt of honor to Jinx [Hannah Waddingham] and Garfield and Odie must help him steal more than 1,600 liters of milk from a factory. They turn to bull Otto [Ving Rhames] for help, who has been depressed since factory owner Marge [Cecily Strong] separated him from his love Ethel [Alicia Grace Turrell]. The screenplay lacks the cynicism that makes Garfield so appealing and the Garfield/slapstick combination is rather unfortunate, to say the least. The voice actors do a fine job and the pace is fast, especially in the second half, but that is not enough to disguise the shortcomings of the screenplay. Ving Rhames provides an amusing parody of Mission: Impossible, but my favorite moment is the sung jingle. Otherwise, good for a smile here and there at most.

Now I don't know if this was made for the little ones among us, but the film did not appeal to me. Boring, humorless (I couldn't find a smile in myself once), and I still thought Garfield had too much energy compared to the comics. Animation style was fine, and the voices of Samuel L. Jackson and Ving Rhames were fun/cool, but it lacks a good story and script. Too bad, missed opportunity.

Nice, entertaining animation film with a fast pace and in style very colorful. Especially in the beginning really funny, afterwards the focus is more on an adventurous story with here and there a few funny moments. Solid without more. 6/10
