Art [Mike Faist] and Patrick [Josh O'Connor] have just won the junior doubles at the US Open when they fall head over heels for Tashi [Zendaya], who won the women's singles. Thirteen years later, Art and Patrick face each other at a challenger tournament. For both men, there is more at stake than honor. Tashi had to end her career early due to an injury and is Arts' coach. Excellent acting, especially by Zendaya, but ultimately there is no story. For more than two hours you will be subjected to chatter about tennis, conversations about relationships in the form of tennis metaphors and hitting a ball back and forth. Guadagnino uses visual tricks (and an extremely annoying soundtrack), but cannot disguise the emptiness of the screenplay. The climax is a game of tennis that cannot be over quickly enough, but because Guadagnino manages to prolong the denouement in an excruciating manner, it seems never-ending. Also, I wonder if Guadagnino and screenwriter Justin Kuritzakes have ever seen a tennis match.

Failed movie. Luca Guadagnino wants all kinds of things, but that doesn't actually make the film work. Often one moment clashes with the next. The scenes on the track are full of visual ideas that are also well executed but are quite separate from the rest, just like the striking soundtrack at times. Tasty, but doesn't fit with the rest. The film should have something erotic, but neat with the clothes on. The two male actors are rather colorless and the whole love triangle can be fascinating, but it never comes to life and is never tangible. Visually it is still nicely shot and the atmospheric images around the tennis world are nice, but the film falls silent too often and is too often not interesting. 2.0*.

A film that could have had more. Zendaya plays the lead as a (tennis) cue between two friends/rivals. A film about tennis, but especially about love. And as often happens with sports films, we get a built-up tension thanks to an ultimate match that goes hand in hand with the intrigues that play out alongside it. Trent Reznor's music helps with this.

The romance isn't too bad, but the thriller content works. The design and the tennis/thriller combination reminded me of Woody Allen's Match Point. Nice to see Zendaya do something different, even if this isn't her best film role here. She plays a lot better in the film Malcolm & Marie and the series Euphoria.

Challengers is a ball on the line and I still give it the benefit of the doubt. It never really becomes great, but overall it is quite an enjoyable film.
