Disney's 17th full-length cartoon. The film is based on the 1956 book "The Hundred And One Dalmatians" by author Dodie Smith. Walt Disney bought the rights to this book in 1957 and immediately started preparing a new full-length cartoon. After the costly flop Sleeping Beauty, there were rumors that Disney's animation studio would be closed, as Disney now had great success with other mediums such as live-action movies, TV series and theme parks. But Walt Disney's heart was still with cartoons and he wanted to keep it at all costs. In order to save costs on animation from now on, xerography was used for the first time for this film, an invention of Urb Iwerks, the first Mickey cartoonist. It was a new process that saved a lot of work. The sketches no longer had to be traced in ink, but were photocopied directly onto film. This process saved the draftsmen a lot of work. However, it was a tough job for them to draw all the Dalmatian spots, because in total there were no less than 6,469,952! This process ultimately ensured that One Hundred And One Dalmatians could be produced for a lower budget (4 million dollars).

However, the animation of this film marked a turning point in Disney history. The backgrounds in particular are a lot simpler than in previous animation films. As a result, One Hundred And One Dalmatians cannot compete in animation with classics such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Bambi and Sleeping Beauty. But beyond that, One Hundred And One Dalmatians has turned out to be an excellent cartoon. The story is told very smoothly and Cruella DeVil is still one of the most successful Disney villains. The film also became a huge success, grossing $14 million during its initial release in the US.

Another one of those Disney classics. Not one of my favorites, but the character Cruella DeVil is all the more so. Still one of the more legendary villains in Disneyland together with for example the sea witch from The Little Mermaid. Also quite a sneer at fur and other animal material for luxurious use, so in that respect quite a film with a message.

This film has put the Dalmatians on the map. A very amiable dog that fits perfectly in the line of the labrador and golden retriever.

The film looks good, is quite exciting. Very pleasant film also at the home of the family and this in sharp contrast to the devilish sneaky pranks of Cruella. Animation quite ok and the story is good too. Not a memorable Disney - the competition is quite big - but it's okay. Nice!

After the live act Cruella (very pleasant) I had to watch the original. But the differences are very large. This Disney is nicely drawn has a good story but occasionally a bit of shit. It only gets fun when the 15 dogs are stolen by two crooks who seem to have just walked out of Home Alone. Nice! I didn't like Cruella herself with her stinking breath. The dalmatians are beautifully drawn and also look nice. The bark alarm is funny. So I had a good time. And a fun movie for the kids. The last plus is that it is beautifully detailed.
