Lightly comic family soap, where you can chuckle about old and new times in Thailand, where everything is quite exaggerated, and which certainly did not move me to tears. I sat there and I watched it, to a coherent script, to excellent actors, but also to a boring, predictable story.

M [Putthipong Assaratanakul] has dropped out of school to become a gamecaster, but has little success. His mother [Sarirat Thomas] tells him that his wealthy grandmother [Usha Seamkhum] has only one year to live and that she and her brothers Kian [Sanya Kunakorn] and Soei [Pongsatorn Jongwilas] have decided not to tell her, M tries to curry favor by visiting his grandmother regularly. But she soon realizes that something is wrong. The international title wrongly suggests that this is a black comedy. In fact, this is a family drama in which grandmother and grandson gradually grow closer and in which Boonnitipat and the two main characters cleverly prevent it from lapsing into cheap sentimentality (despite the atmospheric piano motifs).

A bit melodramatic, but ultimately very touching and sweet. That is the feeling that ultimately prevails in How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies. The film paints a beautiful picture of a family (dynamics), and above all makes you realize how universal and cross-cultural certain family values, feelings and relationships are. It is also a portrait of a city, a country, a society, and in that the uniqueness of Thailand really comes to the fore. It is a beautifully shot film with atmospheric images and beautiful locations. In addition, it is mainly the acting performances that stand out. No one really stands out, but the performances that grabbed you the most are those of the 'main duo', grandmother and grandson. The bond between the two of them is quite prototypical and as you would expect, which makes it a bit clichéd in the beginning, but against my will I was still quite emotional at the end. Nothing really new is done anywhere, but it does work. Nevertheless, I thought the film was a bit too long, especially the first half. A few too many sidesteps here and there, even though you get to know the characters a bit better. But the last part, and especially the last twenty minutes, ultimately left a nice impression, even though you know how the film is going to end. With the 'flashback' scene in which a little M walks hand in hand with his grandmother, on his way to the bank. Moving.

The film also has a lot to say, especially about how younger generations deal with their (grand)parents, but I do think that the film ultimately stands or falls on whether it touches an emotional chord, yes or no. For me it did, but I can also understand if it wouldn't for some others. It certainly won't be for everyone. But come on, nice and sweet is allowed every now and then. 3.5*.
