Olga Chernykh grew up in Donetsk in the 1990s and later moved with her parents to the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. Her grandmother stayed behind in the Donbas, the region of which large parts were captured by pro-Russian rebels in 2014. The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and the subsequent war further increased the distance between Chernykh and her grandmother. “A Picture to Remember” is an essayistic account of the war from the point of view of three generations of women. Chernykh, her mother (who works as a pathologist above a mortuary, where it feels remarkably safe during bombings) and her grandmother regularly video call each other.
