Once again a very poor Spanish horror, if you can call this horror of course. The good thing was that it was over quickly. I already started it with not too high expectations, Spanish and horror, then I already know enough....

Director Paco Plaza conducts a predecessor to Verónica, which was also released on Netflix. That film soon became known as an extremely exciting event, but things remained noticeably quieter around Hermana Muerte. Not entirely without reason, because Plaza decided to change course somewhat. The event still falls within the horror boundaries, but with a decent dose of drama and a slower pace. It takes a very long time before things loosen up and that is unfortunately at the expense of Aria Bedmar's fine acting. The structure is more artistic than effective and that results in few noteworthy moments during the first half, but eventually Plaza gradually introduces the highlights as the second half progresses. The handling of the explicit horror is skillful, the finale is very nice and the acting is not bad, but all in all the film delivers too little to remain continuously interesting. You will probably have to be really captivated by the atmosphere to see this as an effective horror film, otherwise you will quickly encounter an excess of drama.

From the same director there is also Veronica which I definitely want to catch up on very soon. I have heard a lot of good things about it. This Hermana muerte disappointed me a bit. What is noticeable is the excellent atmosphere. An old grim monastery is of course the perfect location for this. Beautifully captured, that's for sure.

Less scary than I had anticipated, subdued almost with the focus also on drama and therefore mainly atmosphere. It does not benefit the tension. You do notice that with Plaza there is someone with know-how behind the scenes. At the end it suddenly goes up a gear, but then I didn't feel like it anymore. All in all not super bad and some people might like it.
