20.000 Especies de Abejas plot

An eight-year-old suffers because people continue to address the child in a way that causes discomfort. They continue to call the child by his birth name Aitor. And the nickname Cocó, while less obviously wrong, doesn't feel right either. During a summer in the Basque Country, the child confides these concerns to relatives and friends. But how can a mother cope with her child's search for identity if she herself is still dealing with her own ambivalent parental legacy?

The biggest flaw in this film is the pace. During the first 40 minutes little or nothing happens. The subplot about a missing saint doesn't go anywhere either. They would have been better off shortening the film by half an hour.

2.0 *

On the occasion of her nephew's baptism, Ane [Patricia López Arnaiz] is staying with her children with her mother Lourdes [Ane Gabarain], a passionate beekeeper. Lourdes notices that Aitor [Sofía Otero] is uncomfortable and discovers what Aitor's parents are overlooking: Aitor identifies as a girl. 8-year-old Otero is phenomenal as Aitor/Lucia, an extraordinarily complex role for which she won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. Was nominated for 15 Goya Awards in his own country, but won none. Perhaps the relevant but controversial theme was still a bridge too far? Regardless, this is one of the best films about gender identity, ideal as educational material for any target group because of its down-to-earth approach and lack of sentiment.

At least twenty minutes too long and yet full of half-developed plot elements (the mother's career path) and characters you hardly get to know. Fortunately, there is a solid foundation with Sofía Otero's beautiful role as Aitor/Cocó/Lucia, but after a while the many meandering scenes start to look very similar. I was still leaning towards a just passing grade, but the strange ending made it feel like a waste of two precious hours. It probably doesn't help that I'm with Cowboys and L' Immensità I've already seen two better films on this subject...
