Vrouwen van Suriname plot

Four militant women from Suriname speak; Jetty, Sonja, Somai and Sylvie. They tell how they keep their heads above water in harsh conditions. They have numerous families to feed; the men work in the city and earn meager wages. There is little evidence of the promised increase in prosperity. As in the years before independence, Suriname's wealth (bauxite, gold, oil) is extracted and exploited by the large Dutch and American companies, the population does not share in the profits. The poor economic situation and corruption in government circles are leading many Surinamese to move to the Netherlands. There they have to deal with discrimination, racism and unemployment.
