There were several promotional posters of The Mean One in the Pathé cinema chain, but an actual release was not allowed. In retrospect, this turns out to be a wise choice from Pathé's perspective, because director Steven LaMorte does not exactly deliver the highest quality. It concerns a woman who has to battle an evil Christmas spirit, played by David Howard Thornton (Art the Clown). In principle, I also constantly got the feeling that I was watching Art himself, because Thornton can't resist providing the Grinch with his usual cartoonish features. LaMorte handles the tension exceptionally poorly and the acting of the protagonists is so terrible that there is not an ounce of sympathy. In addition, the silly sound editing turns the threat into an almost cheerful friend and the film only comes alive when random figures are bloodily pulled apart. The most noteworthy moment occurs within the first half hour during a restaurant massacre, everything after that is depicted on a significantly smaller scale. Structurally and visually, The Mean One is an absolute mess, but things are kept fairly practical and Thornton does what he can. I strongly advise those who had cinema plans for TMO to actually go through with these plans.
