A-ha: The Movie plot

"The story of three young boys who chose to follow the impossible dream."

Take on Me by the Norwegian band a-ha became a worldwide hit in 1984 and took prize after prize to Norway. A fairytale followed, never before has a Norwegian band achieved so many international successes. Yet the band members were not always satisfied. Rather, they dreamed of being serious rock stars, not teen idols in glossy magazines. Combining archival footage with new recordings and interviews from the group, Thomas Robahm and Aslaug Holm incorporate a number of animated scenes emphatically in the style of Steve Barron's work in the then groundbreaking Take on Me music video. a-ha: The Movie is an insightful study of a-ha's music and the mutual relationships between the band members, but it is also a film that moves and brings joy.

Will A-Ha record any new material? It's a big deal, says Waaktaar. Not even close, explains Furuholmen. Anyone who thought that everything is and was a piece of cake in the most successful Norwegian pop band of all time is immediately left with no illusions. This documentary focuses on the years in which the three band members completely devoted themselves to their musical careers and discusses the peaks and valleys. A-Ha is one of those bands that struggled with the balance between musical integrity and the pop idol image that stuck around frontman Morten Harket. Frictions over royalties put relations within the band on edge in this documentary that challenges the band's standard image and in which almost all the hits - with some nice facts for fans - are reviewed. Fans will love that, but A-Ha cannot count on recruiting a new fan base. It remains a bit too much on the surface for that.

As a music lover, I usually see documentaries of bands I already know a lot about. Although it is certainly nice to learn more new things and enjoy direct interviews and the necessary archive images. I only know the big hits from a-ha over the years. This documentary is quite well done. Maybe not as creative as film, but if I want to learn more about a band, this is the approach I like. Enjoy the music that is mainly central and have the feeling that after this documentary you have the complete picture of the band. Although it is of course a selection of more than an hour and a half. It has become a fascinating film, absolutely recommended.

Nice documentary. A-ha was and still is one of my favorite pop bands.

Precisely because she used more synths than guitars. Plus Morten's voice is really beautiful.

I'm usually not a fan of male vocals except for Morten and a few others:

Simon Le Bon (Duran Duran)

Rick Astley

Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet)

Neil Tennant (Pet Shop Boys)

Tom Chaplin (Keane)

I read in a review that the men couldn't stand each other, but I think that's not too bad. In every tire you get 'frictions', but friction gives you shine. So it also produces beautiful music.

I do think Pal is the most difficult of the bunch. I think he has a bit too big an 'ego'. He also shines the least. Too bad, when you've sold 50 million records and made your mark a long time ago.

I would enjoy it a little more and not take yourself too seriously. You've been in there for a long time and they don't have to do it anymore for the money.

So just have fun and release a nice album every now and then, I guess.
