At his father's deathbed, Tim Walker [Jack Wolfe] vows to pursue his dream by enrolling in an education centered entirely on Mozart's work, under the direction of Dr. Longbow [F. Murray Abraham]. There he is certainly not welcomed with open arms, but when he ends up in the library with a songbook of Mozart's Singspiel 'Die Zauberflöte', a magical clock transports him to a fantasy world in which he lives the story of 'Die Zauberflöte' as the main character Prince Tamino. Attempt to bombard a youthful fantasy audience with Mozart is very successful and really makes this an ideal family film. Abraham's role is amusing, especially since he won an Oscar in 1985 as Mozart's competitor Salieri in Amadeus, but it is mainly the young actors who excel. Sabine Devieilhe's interpretation of “Der Hölle Rache” (one of the most difficult vocal pieces in existence) unfortunately cannot match my favorite performance (by Christine van Deutekom), but a family film that warms young viewers to Mozart in this way is something I must give praise.

a bit of a mixture of opera-adventure-fairytale, especially the opera part, is actually not my genre at all. But because I liked the story I kept watching,

and I don't regret it.

occasionally also a bit Harry Potter-like because of the dragon/snake and the mysterious figures, the school etc etc.

so it's kind of hard for me to put this in a bep. genre to place.

half a point less because of the opera/musical content of the film
