Argento is back.

We often see directors try to revive their own creations from their later years. This time, the microphone to do so is passed to Argento. Not that he truly invented these kinds of films, but his role was quite significant, and it's clearly evident in this film.

There was plenty of marketing when this film was announced, but it's clear why it ultimately wasn't released in theaters here. Dark Glasses is very much its own thing, drawing inspiration from previous works Argento has directed. For example, early on, you can see a murder in the stylized overkill of Argento's other films. Up until this point, I was definitely enjoying it.

The modern slant proves advantageous and easily prevents the lackluster acting from throwing too much of a wrench in the works. However, once we approach the film's halfway point, the story itself takes considerably more precedence, resulting in a film that's rather ridiculous and barely a horror film. Argento has often opted for the shift towards fantasy, but this film refuses to do so. It's all the more strange that it does veer in that direction after a while, but doesn't fully commit to it.

An unsatisfying finale and a final half-hour lit far too darkly prevent this film from bringing its very solid first half to a satisfactory conclusion. For a while, Argento has his film well under control. Delightfully modern, and quite colorful too, but ultimately too greedy in its pursuit of originality. I think a more authentic approach, simply rehashing the elements that made Argento so popular, would have worked better. The film you see now can hardly be called truly nostalgic.

Giallo and Argento films often captivate me by incorporating their typical characteristics. Argento's giallo also showcases most of these characteristics, including a few good kills, attention to atmosphere, soundtrack, nudity, and set design. It's remarkable that Argento's story manages to resonate, given its opening and the theme of blindness. Unfortunately, Argento doesn't do enough with it due to the introduction of a child, which mainly weakens the tension and also underplays the character of a murderer targeting a blind woman. There was clearly more potential here. Argento's daughter also appears again as Rita, who works for an organization that helps the blind. The main strengths are a strong soundtrack and two impressively effective kills. Quite entertaining, but given the concept, expectations were higher. 6/10
