Charbonier and Powell have watched Kubrick's The Shining a little too many times and apparently (incorrectly) concluded that they could match something like that. There are far too many moments that explicitly remind us that this cannot match that at all, moreover, the game of the youthful cast is nothing to speak home about. The story concerns two boys who are knocked unconscious while playing outside and awaken in a dark, remote house. This thriller follows their attempts to escape. There's a suspicious cop, a killer with an axe, and one of the boys only has a kitchen knife to defend himself. Anyone who has seen The Shining can already guess what happens next.

It's not the tension, that was good and the atmosphere in the house too. But certain things were just so stupid...and that doesn't do a movie any good. Too much actually, and I'll put them in the spoilers.

Why can't the man see that the cupboard has been moved away and that the safe is visible?

Where's 911? Does it really have to take that long? And then there is only seriously one agent to watch?

Why did that boy go to that vault in the first place? Hoping there was a gun? And then flipping through pictures while that lunatic is showering a few feet away and could be back any minute.

He could have been safe long ago if he'd run right after killing that guy, maybe someone who lives nearby could have called 911 there. Anyway, who knows, someone might stay there to take their buddy with them right away.

Agent doesn't hear from him for a long time, his colleagues aren't like... let me check if everything is okay. Since it's a kidnapping?

Why doesn't the boy take the gun from the woman?

You really can't get rid of all that blood with two cloths that quickly.

And then just want to show that the perpetrators are Trump supporters, well ok.... bit lame
.

It's a well-directed horror movie. In terms of style it is very similar to The Djinn, the next project of these names. That was also a film that had to rely a lot on the structure. Both films have children who wander through a haunted house for a long time and occasionally encounter something threatening. I can therefore hope that the third film of these two will take a different tack.

Fortunately, there is quite a bit of content to enjoy. Neat cinematography and quite exciting moments here and there. However, there is also a lot that was meant to be exciting, but is not. For a film that focuses on tension, that is quite a problem, because there are absolutely no nail-biting sequences and it takes a long time before you as a viewer also feel threatened. Fortunately, there is Chavis. He's acting remarkably well for someone his age, really handsome.

The film starts to wind down a bit further once Bauer's entry is made. There is simply too little threat from that and the macabre underlying idea hardly helps. It also took me a while to realize that the photos that Chavis thinks were of Dewey. The finale is therefore a bit unsatisfying and although directors Charbonier and Powell do everything they can to keep it interesting, they can manage the tension not get under control.

In many ways it really is a beginner film, but one that does have the necessary materials to make it work. Too little consistent tension and too slow a pace. The decor is beautiful, but these are horror films that you will soon forget. Nice to watch as a snack, but that's about it.
