Strong western with a number of unconventional ingredients for the genre. For example, it is mainly set on the coast of California and parts of the film are set with the sea as a backdrop. The film also deviates somewhat in terms of content by not putting good and evil directly opposite each other. Brando's split personality sometimes arouses disgust and other times understanding. Malden's character remains the same, but is increasingly strengthened during the film. Both roles are very well played. The supporting roles are well filled and the story remains very entertaining, even when romance seems to be gaining the upper hand. Ultimately, the film still ends up with a well-known theme within the western: revenge and satisfaction.

The pace is not really high and fans of pure action westerns will probably like this one less. On the other hand, the film does take the time to get to know the characters of Brando and Malden.

4*

I am a big fan of Brando myself, it is a mannered form of acting and therefore not always

of course, but often taken care of down to the last detail, with a great charisma to boot.

I was anything but charmed by his comeback role in The Godfather, played over the top

with the impression that he is secretly making fun of everyone.

In this excellent western he is at his best, although I have to be honest and say that I

Karl Malden thought it was even better, but he can rarely go wrong with me anyway. The long, slow middle section

that is becoming increasingly sultry is actually quite daring because perhaps boredom is on the rise

could be lurking, but that was certainly not the case for me, especially when I watched it again

of, and is actually a very good move, an excruciating rest point in preparation for the eventual

climax, a great finale. With certainly also good roles from Slim Pickens and especially Ben Johnson,

in westerns always like a fish in water and in the genre the ideal supporting actor because of his charisma

and acting actually much more of a cowboy than bigwigs like Wayne, Stewart and Glenn Ford.

I don't know if this western is considered a classic by now, but as far as I'm concerned

may it. I find it quite unique in any case.

A film I had never heard of until recently (and there are a few others) but what a magnificent specimen. Karl Malden and Marlon Brando have the leading roles, effectively stand out, and bring out the strongest acting performances in each other. The entire duration of this not so short film I watched the action and especially the interaction between the two gentlemen with fascination. An oppressive dark atmosphere is maintained throughout, occasionally interrupted by a few romantic moments that are definitely important in the story. You can't tell that Brando is a debutant director at work, although he must have had a good team around him. I was also charmed by the score that was dynamic enough to capture the atmosphere again and again and give it a boost.
