What a dragon of a movie....everything Sandler does anything with is all drama.

The humor completely misses the point and is too childish...don't really understand why the other stars in this film participate in this.

Maybe 'Hubie Halloween' (2020) comes into its own better if you harbor warm feelings towards this American holiday!? But I couldn't do much with an unfunny comedy that's too gross for children, but too blatantly pushes a simplistic morality about bullying down your throat. It doesn't help either that the little bit of horror is flushed down the toilet for shit and piss humor, or a hysterically screaming Adam Sandler playing his usual character: a somewhat dumb man with a speech problem. Just about everyone from Happy Madison's stables is summoned for the obligatory cameos, but then they're given little material to work with, not even a comic genius like Steve Buscemi. It makes me wonder how 'Hubie Halloween' (2020) with a decent budget and a star cast still so blatantly miss the mark. Would they do it on purpose!?

The main problem is that Adam Sandler's formula is 'like'. His humor style has of course always been of the bland kind, but everything up to and including Grown Ups I thought was good. After that it becomes less because he is more and more repetitive and it all has to be even more extreme. His Netflix movies in particular suffer from that and I haven't even seen all of this yet. It smells strongly that the films are viewed much less critically than when they all had a theatrical release. Low point was Sandy Wexler, but Hubie Halloween isn't all that great either.

Sandler's role is very reminiscent of that in The Waterboy: mama's child who is not taken seriously by his environment, which is partly due to a ridiculous voice. While this previously seemed like a single character trait, today Sandler finds it necessary to use this asset every few films. Very annoying, because I was not prepared for it and also found it completely unnecessary. The fact that Sandler's group of friends almost always has to be drummed up in his films is still a nice gimmick, but give them something fun to do too. In this way, Kevin James, Rob Schneider and Steve Buscemi also know very little to straighten out. Strangely enough, this movie is at its best when there's no attempt at comedy. I thought the whole Halloween thing was still quite atmospheric. The decoration and production is fine. In addition, it is also possible to sit out. It's just a shame that almost no joke (anymore) works.

By the way, nice to see Julie Bowen reunited with Sandler. I already liked their chemistry in Happy Gilmore. I think it should be repeated for a (preferably better) film.

2*
