Tragi-comedy about a family where everyone does their utmost to stay within the lines to keep the peace. Compared to the standard Christmas movies, quite refreshing because of the painful message about the impact that not coming out has on the partner.

Abby [Kristen Stewart] is looking forward to finally meeting her friend Harper's [Mackenzie Davis]'s family over Christmas, until she realizes that Harpers hasn't let her family know she's a lesbian yet. Reluctantly, but also with a promise that Harper will take the opportunity to come out, Abby goes along with what should be a white lie. However, Harper's father [Victor Garber] turns out to be a Conservative politician who wants to run for mayor and mother Tipper [Mary Steenburgen] is committed to presenting the 'perfect picture' of a Conservative family to the outside world. Harper keeps postponing her coming out and Abby's frustration grows as a result. However, she receives moral support from an unexpected source. DuVall based the screenplay on her own experiences which undoubtedly explains why she doesn't fall into stereotypes and has empathy and sympathy for everyone involved. She manages to deal with relevant themes in a serious, insightful way and to entertain the audience while avoiding the trap of sentiment overload. You soon know where it will eventually go, but the road to that final destination is definitely worth it.

Not a fan of Christmas movies, but this one was nice. I don't know many films that deal with lesbian love, and that is integrated with a coming out story that seems very plausible to me in the US. So the main character is going to celebrate Christmas with the family of her lover, who is not out of the closet and whose father wants to become mayor. It is not mentioned anywhere, but it is clear that the beloved's parents are Republican. As conservative as the family is, what's more important is that the family is mostly awkward, and that makes for many an awkward and kind of funny scenes.

It is sometimes a bit off balance, because is it a drama or a comedy (it doesn't always mix well here in this film), which is also reflected in the typical gay sidekick who has to provide comic moments, but in the end a decent impressive monologue. Also the role of Plaza, which I otherwise only know from Dirty Grandpa and funny moments in the media, is surprisingly deep.

A lot of drama in the end, but of course everything ends well in a way that is perhaps a bit too sappy and easy. So I don't know if the movie was completely successful, but it was interesting anyway. 2.5*.
