In terms of background, the story is quite unique in its genre. Unfortunately it doesn't really work out. At times it is a bit reminiscent of Apocalypto or Last of the Mohicans, but of course it is nowhere near that. In terms of actors, there are a number of quite well-known ones such as Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Dominic Monaghan. I also know Hannah New from Black Sails, but I didn't really recognize her at first. Something has changed in her face, or it's just me.

Yes, there is indeed a lack of history and a better script. Johathan Rhys Meyers' acting also didn't really do it for me. Too bad because this type of genre is rarely used and it should be better than this.

6.5 points if you ask me, so a big 3***. A somewhat calmer film, which in my opinion gives it a little more depth. Special (true) story that a Briton is crowned as king on Borneo. Despite his noble thoughts, not everyone agrees.

Colony feelgood.

The end of most colonies after the Second World War is a difficult subject in almost all countries that were involved as a late party. France with their Algeria war and Indochine, later Vietnam. England with India, Kenya, Rhodesia/Zimbabwe. Belgium with the Congo. And of course we have Indonesia, and the dubious honor of being the first to find out how that works - so that it is still not possible to talk about it.

In the same light, this film is a refresher, as an unknown piece of history with the wise lesson that things could really have been done differently. That contact between Europeans and Asians was not necessarily always doomed to end in exploitation, abuses and deformities. That the colonial pretensions 'we bring civilization' did not in all cases mean 'we steal everything here and there'.

Rhys Meyers is perhaps not the best choice for the leading role, he appears in too many films to be really credible in any role. But he is satisfactory, and so is the rest of the cast, and the direction is tight enough to get the most out of it. Perhaps more important for the story is that the images look convincingly authentic, and that the story keeps you focused. Whether it is all very close to history, meh, there must have been some poetic freedom applied. Then you can complain that all the complexities of James Brooke's history are not revealed, but as the responsible minister says on the spot, 'it is a film, not a documentary'. And even if you don't want to go along with that, you can always look up the real history - made curious by the film. Plenty of material.
