La Bonne Épouse plot

Maintaining your home and bowing to marital duty without cheating: this is what Paulette Van Der Beck teaches enthusiastically at her housewifery school. Her certainties falter when she herself is widowed and broken. Is it the return of her first love or the ideas of the Paris student revolt of May 68? What if the good wife becomes a free woman?

A somewhat trivial film about the domestic science school of the 1960s, when girls were still being trained to become (mere) housewives, wives and mothers and thus become slaves to men instead of developing themselves. In addition, there is the Parisian student uprising of May 1968 in the background and at the end the headmistress and with it the entire school chooses to join the revolution and the struggle of women to be equal to men[/ spoiler]. It all has very little to do with it, but the film does look away easily.

The name of Simone de Beauvoir, the great driving force behind the women's movement in the 1960s, is also mentioned. Coincidentally, I recently wrote a piece about that that hopefully is a bit less trivial than the movie: Simone de Beauvoir and the need for freedom in dependence.

It was all amusing this new film from Provost. In itself also a good starting point with a vision of society that was still standard 50 years ago. It is actually unbelievable how an established body of thought has evolved in such a short time. We are now talking about gender equality and that is not always obvious in many areas, but the woman as a maid and submissive being to please the man, that went very far.

The pity is that the film is a genre (the comedy) that hardly catches on or not at all. In my opinion, a solid drama on the theme would have come into its own better. Now it all comes across as a bit bland and unconvincing. And you can't really call it a parody either. Binoche remains nice to look at anyway and the beautiful images of Alsace also had something.

In the end, the consciousness process is very easily reversed. I could still take it with Paulette. She had been struggling with the idea for some time. But the sister-in-law and also the nun, no, a little too easy. Not quite, but nice to see if you go for an evening of light-hearted French cinema.

Checked this one out on good luck and it was not wrong. Not a wow movie, but not bad either. It flows smoothly and never gets boring. The cast was well chosen and otherwise it looked fine. It's not a must-see, but nice to see.
