Michel Simon is again the "wild man" (just like in, for example, "Boudu sauvé des eaux") in this French, realistic film that fits perfectly with the time of unemployment and poverty in France in the 1930s and where musette music and melancholy chansons were a welcome form of entertainment.

However, the eye-catcher in this film is Dita Parlo (She also participated in "La Grande illusion") who plays the role of the girl who had never left her own village until her wedding day and now experiences that Paris, in addition to the "Lumière aspect" also has many unpleasant sides.

Beautiful portrayal of the times, rough and emphasizing the many "unattainables" and as far as romance is concerned, the scenes in which both spouses long for each other are very striking.

Only film I saw by Jean Vigo. Not surprising because the man died very young. Was considered a great talent and a "Jean Vigo Prize" is awarded every year.

Good film, but without heavy drama. Fits perfectly in its time.

First and last Vigo.

Dying early helps myth formation. Now this film may have had its value in context, but I didn't find it that striking. I can see the link with Sunrise, but I still found it more enjoyable.

The characters are especially annoying here. Jules is an extremely irritating caricature, but Jean and Juliette are also quite irritating. They rarely actually want to become characters, as they mainly respond to situations from the situation rather than from their character. This makes them appear rather unstable and unbelievable.

Not that interesting either. A bit touristy at times, a farming couple who end up in wild Paris and are overwhelmed by city life. Visually there is sometimes a nice shot, but it is never impressive and often it is just very ugly. The soundtrack is especially present again. Unfortunately not to leave a mark, but to mask silences.

Fortunately, the film isn't too long, but that's the only plus point. I'm not happy that Vigo died so quickly, but I am happy that the films have remained the same.

A film that did not have the impact for me that Sunrise did. Definitely a solid film about a newlywed couple traveling to Paris. There the woman discovers a completely different world that brings the marriage to pieces.

The film has a number of beautiful scenes and its funny moments, but it never really made an impression on me. I was not sufficiently captured by the events or the characters, which came across as rather contrived.

The camera work, on the other hand, was up to standard. A film that appealed to me more technically than in terms of content.
